There’s been a great deal of commentary about who the next president may be. One of the qualities that’s discussed is intelligence. While we certainly don’t want or need a dummy in the White House, we don’t need the president to be the smartest man in the room. Moderate intelligence is adequate if the president has other qualities.

A Leader is a person who stands in front and says “Follow Me!” They have a vision of where their followers must go and they lead them there. They have collected information and facts from their staff. Some members of their staff may be intelligent but they don’t have to belong to Mensa either. Being the smartest person in the room may help you play Jeopardy, but it doesn’t always accomplish much. The staff puts together information in a way the leader can understand and analyze. A good leader will ask questions and look for more information.

After collecting information the leader will come to conclusions and get feedback from his staff and advisors based on those conclusions. From that point they will create a plan and then implement that plan.

Effective Leaders will also be effective communicators. As the Leader determines how to solve the problems of those who are following, the Leader stands in front and communicates to the group. “We are here, and we need to get there. Here’s how we will get there, it won’t be easy, but we’ll do it together.”

You’ll notice none of this requires a pollster or a political advisor. The skills a leader needs are Confidence, Communication, Effective Listening skills, Decisiveness, Problem Solving, Perseverance, and a Leader must be thick skinned. Leaders are constantly criticized and second guessed, by those who are quick to criticize and complain but refuse to offer any help in solving problems. Their criticism is worth as much as the help they provided, usually not very much. Not even worth the wind used to deliver their whining messages.

Those in the media used to be the watch dog of the people, but they lost the ability to do that when they drifted so far to the left. Impartial reporting of events should be a part of the public discourse, but too few individuals who make a living reporting events are skewed too far to the left and lost their objectivity. We should have objective reporting, but with the technology available now we have access to too many original sources. It’s not necessary for someone in the media to tell us what we saw heard or read. Another testament to their growing irrelevance.

We need leaders in office and we need leaders to fix the problems created by politicians. We’ve had politicians in office for so long that they only know how make a mess. They have no idea how to understand what the public wants, needs, or deserves. Politicians need to be voted out of office and Leaders have to be elected.

The spending problems are real; the spending must come under control. Revenue is not a problem, they collect lots of money, and they must learn to spend much less. The solutions will be painful for most of us; we all expect the government to give us something. We have to learn that government is not the solution to our problems. Government is usually the source of our problems.

Leaders have to start the movement from government run by politicians and bureaucrats and government answering to the people again. Remember, “We The People” created this system of government and “We The People” can bring it back to where it belongs, to the people.

As the elections become more and more real to most citizens we have to look for leaders and then vote for them. Politicians need political advisors and pollsters. Leaders need information and communications skills and intestinal fortitude.

Find a leader, vote for a leader.
