The Birth of a Country
We’ll soon be celebrating the Fourth of July. The day when we frequently think back and remember our Founding Fathers and how they put together this great country. Many of us feel a great deal of pride in our country and our flag and think about how many men and women made some great sacrifices to secure our freedoms and independence. Not every one in an elected position shares those feelings. Some of them are ashamed of the super power this country had become. We’re becoming ashamed of them and those feelings.
The foresight and the genius of our Founding Fathers created a lasting form of government that‘s served us well for more than 200 years. It will continue to serve us well for many more years. We can endure anything that comes our way. Men and women have offered their service to protect us from threats that originate outside our boarders. They have for generations and they will continue for many more generations to come.
We suffer from threats that originate from within our boarders as well. Men and women in elected positions who campaigned on one platform but govern from another set of goals and objectives that they did not campaign on. It’s only partly their fault; most of it’s our fault. We elected them and we must suffer them until we vote them out of office. Our Founding Fathers had to resort to revolution to establish our government, but because of their genius we have Election Day and the ballot box to do what needs to be done. With the current crop of public servants we must do a thorough house cleaning.
A wife can’t trust a husband who has problems with fidelity and a voter can’t trust a representative who forgets what they campaigned on or who they must be loyal to. When we vote for them they owe us their respect and their loyalty. Our concerns must be their concerns. They represent us, not their party leaders or the special interests that provided the means to fool us into voting for them. The only reasons they need a lot of money to run for public office is to use the media to convince us that they are better than their opponent. They do that because we respond to the lies, misrepresentations and distortions. As a group voters are not as critical as we should be. The Founding Fathers gave us a system of government that will stand the test of time, but they didn’t teach us how to listen and to evaluate and to comprehend the words public figures use to convince us they are the best choice.
The media is supposed to be the public watchdog, but they have become too partisan as well. They should challenge the inconsistent comments of candidate and challenge them to based on the facts. They only do it if it fits their image of what’s right and what’s wrong. The challengers should identify inconsistent promises and actions, but then the media accuses the challenger of running a dirty campaign. For each elected official there’s a lot of information and misinformation, some of us don’t like to read and don’t listen carefully and want to vote but hate to think. Too much is at stake this time and we must all pay close attention.
